Refocus this Fall: Transition from Summer to a Routine that Works for You

In my house, fall represents the return of schedules, planning, and productivity. The kids are back in school (my oldest is away at college now 🙁), so I have the house to myself again for most of the workday. This also means I’m shifting from the unstructured, relaxed vibes of summer to following a regular schedule, building a solid routine, and focusing on my goals.

But if I’m not careful, the routine I will create may not support my health goals. So spending some time being intentional about what I want to build in really helps.

And how can I bring my focus back to my priorities so that I can get more done without spending more time? This is a critical question. Because the goal is to work smarter, not harder. No toxic productivity/work until you drop energy for me anymore!

The Short Attention Span

One of the biggest challenges in this transition is adjusting to the demands on my attention. After a season of spontaneity, it can be tough to rewire my brain for focus. The era of endless digital distractions doesn’t make it any easier.

Whether it's notifications from our phones, the pull of social media, or even just the urge to multitask, maintaining concentration for extended periods is becoming increasingly difficult for all of us.

Our attention spans are shrinking - the average estimated at 8.25 seconds!!! Studies show that the average human attention span has dropped significantly in recent years. This makes it all the more important to be mindful about how we approach our day-to-day tasks.

Enhancing Focus: Do Not Disturb and Minimizing Distractions

One strategy that many find effective in regaining focus is the use of the “Do Not Disturb” on our devices. When I’m in a “Do Not Disturb” mode, I’m signaling to myself and others that I’m in work mode—ready to dive into a task without interruptions.

But it’s not just about technology. Minimizing distractions in my environment also plays a huge role. I’ve learned to create a workspace that’s free from unnecessary clutter, which helps me stay focused on the task at hand.

It’s amazing how something as simple as clearing off our desks can make a difference in our ability to concentrate.

The Power of the Pomodoro Technique

Another tool I rely on when I need to focus is the Pomodoro Technique. This time management method involves working for 25-minute intervals (called Pomodoros) followed by a short break.

After four Pomodoros, there is a longer break. The beauty of this technique lies in its simplicity and its ability to break down work into manageable chunks, making even the most daunting tasks feel achievable.

By working in these focused bursts, we’re able to maintain our attention span and prevent burnout. The regular breaks also provide a chance to step away, refresh, and return to work with renewed energy.

Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about checking off each Pomodoro as we complete it—like making visible progress toward our goals.

Embracing the Structure of Fall

As much as I love the lazy days of summer, there’s a certain satisfaction in returning to a structured schedule.

Fall is a time of new beginnings, and with the right strategies in place, it’s also a time for renewed focus and productivity. By using these tools, we can navigate the transition smoothly and make the most of this season of change.

So here’s to embracing the fall and all the productivity it brings! Whether you’re tackling work projects, personal goals, or just trying to stay on top of daily life, remember that a little structure can go a long way.
